A video installation will be on display from February 8th to March 16th as a pre-event ahead of the international exhibition "PARASOPHIA: Kyoto International Festival of Contemporary Culture 2015" in Kyoto.
The exhibit features South African artist William Kentridge's large-scale video installation, "The Refusal of Time." Its complex composition combines five-screen video, multiple sound effects, and symbolic kinetic machinery. It was exhibited at the contemporary art exhibition "Documenta 13" in 2012, and attracted hundreds of thousands of visitors from around the world. Its profound meditations on time and profound visual effects have garnered acclaim, leading to its acquisition by the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, among other acquisitions, and its collections and exhibits in various museums around the world. This marks its first appearance in Asia.
Kentridge himself will visit Japan in mid-February during the exhibition, and will hold a lecture on February 22nd to discuss his work.
Kentridge is an artist based in Johannesburg. He is involved in a wide range of art, including hand-drawn animation films made from sketches filmed stop-motion, also known as "moving drawings," as well as printmaking, installations, performances, puppet shows, and opera. In 2010, he was awarded the 26th Kyoto Prize.
This Parasophia event is scheduled to run from early March to early May 2015.
