The exhibition "Graffiti Rings by Hideyuki Nakayama," a collaboration between German jewelry brand Niessing and architect Hideyuki Nakayama, is running until November 10th at Niessing Tokyo (1F, Cinq Aoyama, 5-9-10 Minami-Aoyama, Minato-ku, Tokyo). For this exhibition, Nakayama created two new designs for Niessing's "Graffiti" jewelry line, which allows users to apply pictures or text to the surface of the rings: a "Metal Tree" and a "Ring of Rings." The exhibition also features an installation showcasing Niessing jewelry alongside three architectural models Nakayama created for competitions: "Too Small a Building," "Big Door on the Grassland," and "Mansion N on Lake K." The exhibition was directed by Eizo Okada (S&O DESIGN). Nakayama, who is designing jewelry for the first time, says, "When I design, I first sketch in two dimensions and then create a three-dimensional representation. It's the same when designing jewelry. Niessing jewelry is centered on structurally efficient designs, so I used only circles and lines to express a simple worldview. As you turn the ring on your finger, the density of the lines and circles changes, revealing a different look, so I hope you enjoy that." Niessing was founded in Germany in 1873. The company produces jewelry made from gold, platinum, diamonds, steel, and high-quality synthetic materials. Characterized by designs that bring out the beauty of the materials themselves, it has been praised as jewelry that embodies the principles of Bauhaus. It has previously won the Red Dot Design Award and the iF Design Award. In 1979, Walter Wittek released "The Niessing Ring." The design, which has no claws to hold the gemstones in place and gives the impression of floating diamonds, was patented. His works are on display in the collections of the National Museum of Art and Crafts (Oslo, Norway) and the Museum of Arts and Crafts (Hamburg).
