The Tokyo Opera City Art Gallery in Shinjuku, Tokyo, is currently hosting "The Encyclopedia of Katayama Masamichi," an exhibition showcasing the vast collection of interior designer Masamichi Katayama. The exhibition runs until June 25th.
Masamichi Katayama is an interior designer who has garnered worldwide acclaim. His uncompromising approach to creativity, which transcends conventional concepts, is evident in his uncompromising approach. His use of design as a flexible tool to expand ideas and connect disparate elements also highlights his unique side as a collector. The vast collection on display, like the breadth of Katayama's work, spans a wide range of genres and eras. From books, CDs, taxidermy, antiques, furniture, and succulents to contemporary art, visitors can explore the essence of Katayama's creativity through his curiosity and aesthetic sensibility.
The greatest highlight of this exhibition is that Katayama himself categorized and edited his collection, created an art gallery space, and displayed it in the exhibition room. For Katayama, whose eyes are both "material" and "stimulus," his collection, a culmination of his inquisitive spirit, is not a systematic one. Rather than a museum exhibition, this is a first for the museum, creating an "exciting space" that feels like a shopping spree. This is a space where the "public" of a designer and the "private" of a collector intersect, allowing visitors to experience Katayama's exceptional creations, which uncover a myriad of possibilities. Furthermore, the exhibition's title, "Encyclopedia," is taken from the French encyclopedia that was compiled over 20 years with the help of not only renowned scholars but also many unknown authors at the time, directly reflecting the origins of Katayama's collection. The exhibition will be presented in unique categories, such as "People and Animals," "Black and White Photography," and "Conceptual Art," allowing visitors to experience Katayama's labyrinth of thought, utilizing every inch of the space.
