Catherine Deneuve was born on October 22, 1943, in Paris, France.
Both her parents and sister were actors, and she herself began appearing in films as a teenager. In 1964, her musical film "The Umbrellas of Cherbourg" won the Grand Prix at the Cannes Film Festival, catapulting her to global stardom. In 1992, she was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actress for "Indochine." In 1998, she won the Best Actress award at the Venice Film Festival for "Place Vendôme."
In her personal life, she had a son with film director Roger Vadim in 1963, but never married. She married photographer David Bailey in 1965, but they divorced in 1972. She later had a daughter with actor Marcello Mastroianni, but they never married. She is also known as an icon and client of the fashion brand Yves Saint-Laurent, and frequently appears as a model for perfumes and cosmetics. Saint Laurent designed her costumes for the film Belle de Jour, in which she starred. The shoes she wears in the film are by Roger Vivier. Also, in June of this year, The Umbrellas of Cherbourg was digitally restored and screened worldwide. Keita Maruyama, which features the film, has released an original coat featuring her as its muse. Furthermore, to commemorate her 70th birthday, "Screen Beauties Vol. 2: Catherine Deneuve" will be screened at Shinjuku Piccadilly and other theaters nationwide from November 16th. The digitally remastered versions bring to life three films starring Deneuve: The Umbrellas of Cherbourg, Manon (1967), and Love Until Dark (1969).
