Jun opens second Biotope store in Osaka. Will it revive the Horie area?

Apr 29, 2014

On April 26th, Jun opened the second store of its comprehensive lifestyle shop, Biotope, in Minami-Horie, Osaka. The building previously housed A.P.C. on the first floor, with retail space on the first and second floors and an outdoor café on the rooftop. The store covers 793.4 square meters, twice the size of the first store, which opened four years ago in Shirokanedai, Tokyo. The store offers apparel, cosmetics, miscellaneous goods, and ornamental plants in a 3:1:1 ratio. The apparel selection is primarily imported and sourced from domestic brands, with original items limited to basic T-shirts, pajamas, and towels. Imports include Saint Laurent and Stella McCartney, and domestic brands like Visvim. In recent years, Osaka has seen an increase in visitors to central terminals such as Umeda, Namba, and Tennoji, while the Kita-Minami Horie and Minami-Senba districts, dotted with street-level shops, have been in decline. The withdrawal of A.P.C., which had been a landmark in Minami-Horie for many years, last fall could be seen as symbolic of this. Biotope, which says it "aims to become a new landmark for the Horie district" (Sales Department Manager Mishiro Akira), has opened in the same building, and its opening could be the catalyst for the revival of the Horie district. Future store opening plans for Biotope have not yet been decided, but Takeru Sakomura, director of the Adam et Rope business division, said, "We are not considering a large-scale chain store, but would like to open one store in each major city across the country. We aim to have a landmark store in each major city as well."
