Shiseido typeface furoshiki to be sold exclusively at The Ginza, using Kyo-Yuzen techniques

Apr 16, 2014

On April 17th, Shiseido will release Shiseido typeface furoshiki (3,600 yen) at SHISEIDO THE GINZA in Tokyo's Ginza district. The three types—"Bi," "Asobimasho," and "Tsuratsura Tsubaki"—featuring Shiseido's original typeface (font) dyed using techniques from Okashige, a Kyoto yuzen dyeing shop founded in 1855. The Shiseido typeface was established by in-house designers in 1927, shortly after the company's founding. It includes English, hiragana, katakana, and kanji, as well as a unique Japanese font, and is used on cosmetics packaging, advertisements, and Shiseido Gallery signage. It eventually became customary for new designers to practice drawing the Shiseido typeface. Shiseido's official YouTube channel is currently hosting a video titled "Playing with Beauty and Calligraphy," which shows the typeface creation process.
