Gallery NANZUKA in Shibuya, Tokyo, is hosting "GUZO," a solo exhibition by Japanese artist Haroshi, who creates works using recycled skateboard decks, through June 10th.
Since 2003, Haroshi has been creating unique sculptures and installations. Through his collaborations with HUF, the streetwear brand created by charismatic skater Keith Hufnagel, and his BATB trophy, he embodies the depths of contemporary street culture, and has exhibited in New York, Los Angeles, and London.
A skater himself since childhood, Haroshi was inspired to create artworks using broken skateboard parts and decks that he had kept in his room. With the help of various networks, he collects used decks that would normally be thrown away and uses them to create his works. This is not simply recycling, but a salvation act born from a love for skateboarding, which has earned him a strong following among many in the street culture community.
The exhibition will feature works created by layering collected scrap skateboards to form blocks, from which sculptures are then created. In addition to a group of over 20 sculptures made from salvaged skateboard decks, the exhibition will also feature a quarter-lamp-shaped installation made from salvaged decks.
During the exhibition, anyone who donates an old skateboard will receive one of 300 autographed special GUZO stickers (not for sale). Additionally, those who donate five or more decks will receive an additional 100 hologram stickers, limited to one each.
