"Memento Mori," a photography exhibition by Robert Mapplethorpe, one of the most important artists of the 20th century, will be held at Chanel Nexus Hall in Ginza, Tokyo, from March 14 to April 9. The exhibition features approximately 90 of Mapplethorpe's works from the private collection of internationally acclaimed architect Peter Marino. The diverse range of his work, from still lifes and floral subjects to nudes and portraits, is on full display. Marino, who also curated and organized the exhibition, divided the space into three smaller galleries. The first two rooms, clad in white, feature classical sculptures, still lifes, close-ups of body parts, and photographs of clothed figures, all framed in black wooden frames. In the all-black third room, more provocative works are juxtaposed against black leather-like walls alongside Mapplethorpe's signature floral photographs. The exhibition explores the duality of Mapplethorpe's complex body of work throughout.
The exhibition will also travel to Kyoto as part of the KYOTOGRAPHIE Kyoto International Photography Festival, which will be held from April 15th to May 14th.
