Tadanori Yokoo's paintings of Japan's original landscapes, from masterpieces to new works, on display at Towada Art Center

May 14, 2017

From June 17th to September 24th, the Towada Art Center in Towada, Aomori, will be hosting a special exhibition of artist Yokoo Tadanori's work, "Yokoo Tadanori: Towada Romance Exhibition: POP IT ALL."

Starting in the early 1970s, Yokoo Tadanori spent two years traveling around Japan, creating landscape paintings. This series, titled "Travels to the Original Landscapes of Japan," includes the work "Lake Towada, Oirase" (1973), which is said to be the origin of Yokoo Tadanori's later signature theme of "waterfalls." The "Waterfall" series includes works that use a technique called technamement, which allows the viewer to enjoy the image of light running like flowing water. The exhibition will display large-scale works related to "Waterfall" as well as a carefully selected collection of masterpieces from among the works created using this technamement technique, as well as unreleased new works, early paintings, a Mozart Maitreya statue that blends Eastern and Western imagery, and sculptures and paintings featuring cats, which he has been actively painting in recent years.

In addition, Yokoo Tadanori will be holding a public workshop (free of charge, exhibition ticket required) on June 17th, the first day of the exhibition, from 10am to 12pm, and on July 29th and 30th there will be a workshop called "MAKE IT POP - Make Something Pop" (advance booking required, details will be posted on the official website at a later date) where participants will be able to create collages and mini posters and exhibit them at a venue in the city (14-54 Inomachi, Towada City, Aomori Prefecture). On August 26th there will be a curator's talk in the museum's community activity space by exhibition planner and museum director Koike Kazuko and co-planner Kanazawa Rin. Further event details will be posted on the website (http://towadaartcenter.com/) at a later date. During the exhibition, approximately 450 meters of Towada City Shopping Arcade, located about a five-minute walk from the museum, will be decorated with posters and stickers of Tadanori Yokoo's exhibition, and the wrapping paper of the shops in the arcade will also be changed to the exhibition poster design for a limited time.
