The "Kaleidoscope 200th Anniversary Kaleidoscope Exhibition 2016," one of Tokyo's largest kaleidoscope events, will be held at Bunkamura Gallery in Shibuya, Tokyo, from September 17th to September 28th.
In recent years, kaleidoscopes have been reborn as beautiful works of art. With the addition of the specialized skills of glass and wood artisans, kaleidoscopes have not only created stunning images when viewed through them, but have also undergone dramatic evolution in appearance.
This year, this exhibition, held to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the kaleidoscope, will showcase a wide range of cutting-edge kaleidoscopes. The venue will feature a special exhibit of works by Koji Yamami, a leading figure in the Japanese kaleidoscope world who won the 2016 Grand Prize at the World Kaleidoscope Competition held annually in the United States. There will also be a special corner showcasing the worldview of Yamami's works. The exhibition also features "This is it!", the latest work by modern kaleidoscope artist Yasuko Nakazato; a fashionable kaleidoscope by Hajime Seki, a leading accessory kaleidoscope designer; and kaleidoscope paintings by three popular artists, depicting ever-changing kaleidoscope images inspired by "a moment of astonishment that you'll want to watch forever!" Additionally, the exhibition will feature captivating kaleidoscopes by popular artists Shigeru & Izumi Haneishi, Hiryu Sobajima, Junko Horikoshi, Tatsuya Kurokawa, and Kazuko Hayashi. Bunkamura will also be selling limited-edition commemorative models commissioned from these artists, marked "bicentennial (200th anniversary)." There will also be a special corner featuring kaleidoscopes inspired by this year's themes of "flowers" and "space," as well as a lineup of plastic kaleidoscopes. The gallery's annually popular kaleidoscope workshop will be held again this year. You can learn how to make your own original kaleidoscope directly from Japan's leading kaleidoscope artists, Akiko Suzuki, Koji Yamami, and Motohiro Sato.
