"Peter Rabbit" Exhibition to be held in Shibuya, tracing Beatrix Potter's creations through over 200 original drawings and sketches

Jul 17, 2016

The "Peter Rabbit Exhibition," Japan's largest exhibition celebrating the 150th anniversary of the birth of Beatrix Potter, the creator of the Peter Rabbit series, will be held at Bunkamura The Museum in Shibuya, Tokyo, from August 9th to October 11th. Born in London in 1866, Beatrix Potter loved sketching animals and plants from a young age. The story "The Tale of Peter Rabbit" originated from a picture letter she sent to Noel, the son of her governess, Annie Moore, in 1893. In 1901, she published a private edition of "The Tale of Peter Rabbit" at her own expense. In 1902, the original black-and-white line drawings were colored and published by Frederick Warne. Ultimately, 24 picture books were published. Beatrix used the income she earned as a picture book author to move to the Lake District, a place she had longed for, and in her later years, she devoted herself to ranching and nature conservation. This exhibition explores the origins of Beatrix Potter's creative work and delves into the untold story of Peter's birth. It features over 200 artworks and documents, including original handwritten illustrations and sketches from her picture books, owned by the National Trust, a trust she supported throughout her life, as well as Beatrix Potter's favorite items. The exhibition will feature all 44 original illustrations from the first "Peter Rabbit" (private edition), on display in Japan for the first time, as well as original handwritten illustrations, sketches, and drafts from her picture book series. It also explores the multifaceted character of Beatrix, who was not only a picture book author but also a conservationist, farm manager, and product producer. The exhibition will travel to the Fukuoka Prefectural Museum of Art from October 28 to December 11, after first opening in Tokyo. It is scheduled to continue to Sendai, Osaka, Hiroshima, and Nagoya. The exhibition's official supporter is Dean Fujioka, an actor, artist, and film director. At the venue, he will act as an audio guide navigator, guiding visitors through the exhibition in English as well.
