Each bookstore will act as a concierge, recommending "the book you should read right now" to FASHION HEADLINE readers. Every Thursday, each branch of the art bookshop "NADiff" will introduce a recommended book. This time, we'll be introducing the Shibuya branch of NADiff modern (Bunkamura, 1F, 2-24-1 Dogenzaka, Shibuya-ku, Tokyo).
■ "THAND TOOLS" by Philippe Weisbecker
Philippe Weisbecker is a French artist and illustrator based in Paris and Barcelona. He has worked extensively in publishing and advertising, and is well known in Japan for his work on Toraya, Claska, and Shiseido's "Hanatsubaki."
His drawings of everyday objects and buildings, using a unique form known as "reverse perspective" that differs from the usual perspective technique that creates a sense of depth, somehow evoke a nostalgic, even warm, feeling. They are also simple and uncluttered. It's no wonder he has such an interest in Japan.
During a four-month stay in Kyoto in 2002, Weisbecker became fascinated by the tools of Japanese artisans and drew them in deadstock notebooks. This book is a complete 64-page re-release of the original 48-page collection of drawings published in 2003.
The drawings flow calmly, without any words or explanations.
Simply gazing quietly is the best way to describe it.
