A photo exhibition focusing on pencils used by world-famous artists, including Kengo Kuma and Ryuichi Sakamoto from Japan.

Sep 25, 2016

"THE SECRET LIFE OF PENCIL," an exhibition focusing on pencils, will be held at the Paul Smith Space Gallery in Omotesando, Tokyo, from October 6th to November 13th. The exhibition is organized by product and packaging designer Alex Hammond and photographer Mike Tinney. During the exhibition, photographs of pencils used by famous people such as Paul Smith, product designer Tom Dixon, sculptor Anish Kapoor, and photographer David Bailey will be on display and for sale. In this digital society, the exhibition aims to convey how the pencil, an incredibly simple writing instrument, continues to play a vital role in the work of world-class artists, architects, writers, and designers, and to explore the profound joy of using a pencil. The exhibition was originally held at the Paul Smith No. 9 Albemarle Street Shop in May 2015, and for the Japanese event, new photographs of pencils used by artists such as Hara Kenya, Tanijiri Makoto, Tanaami Keiichi, Kuma Kengo, Sukita Masayoshi, Sakamoto Ryuichi, NIGO (R), and Klein Dytham architecture will be added.

The event is also collaborating with Children in Crisis, a UK charity that provides educational opportunities and protection to children in disadvantaged circumstances, and a portion of the sales will be donated.
