Akira Uno, one of Japan's leading illustrators, will be holding a solo exhibition, "Caprice," from September 28th to October 4th at the gallery on the 7th floor of Ginza Mitsukoshi.
The exhibition features works by Uno, who has been active at the forefront of the art world since the 1960s, drawn without a set theme, following his sensibility. The title of the exhibition, "Caprice," refers to a musical piece also known as a rhapsody, in which pieces are combined whimsically to form a single, larger musical composition. The new works he created specifically for the exhibition were drawn according to Uno's whims, but when he finished, they maintained a single tone, resulting in a composition reminiscent of a caprice.
The exhibition will feature 24 original drawings, 15 prints (both new and old), and three three-dimensional objects. All of the original paintings are on canvas, consisting of 0S, SSM, 4S, 8S, and 50F. One of the highlights is the large-scale 50F (116.7cm x 91.0cm) work "I Am the Sea...", which Uno rarely paints as a work of art.
Regarding his new works, Uno commented, "They're like slightly quirky skits, like jokes that could only exist in painting, like nonsensical poetry. In other words, these paintings are like a deranged encyclopedia." Uno himself will be present from 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM on October 2nd.
