Fashion designer Yanaihara Mitsushi's "FLOATING LIFE Exhibition: Clothes for a Floating World" will be held from September 28th to October 2nd at Zou-no-hana Terrace in Yokohama's Minato Mirai district.
Yanaihara Mitsushi is an unusual fashion designer who started his career with stage costumes and is also active as an artist and art director. For this exhibition, he will be presenting his first new collection in four seasons at Zou-no-hana Terrace, a symbolic location in Yokohama where he is based. The exhibition is a participatory installation where visitors can experience wearing the new collections through a mysterious fitting room.
Regarding the exhibition, Yanai commented, "Only everyone other than myself can see me, but I cannot see myself. Yet before I know it, I find myself twisting my body in an awkward way and using even the most convenient media, struggling to somehow see myself. By solidifying this uncertain and vague existence of myself with clothing, perhaps I can become a little more free? Perhaps I can float lightly and strongly in the world. In my Yokohama atelier, I make clothes that have been taken apart in terms of scale, position, function, and many other aspects, and then reassembled. Clothes that make you question the idea of a one-sided existence. If you put on such clothes and enter a mysterious fitting room where you see yourself reflected from many different perspectives, you may be able to notice a different side of yourself than usual."
