This week, a new department store girl character will debut at Isetan Shinjuku. She's called "Depaga-chan." She's the creator of manga artist Tanaka Katsuki, known for his works "Baka Drill," "Ossu, Tonko-chan," and the all-time hit "Koppu no Fuchiko." According to Tanaka Katsuki, Depaga-chan was born from the "delusions" of people who frequent and work at department stores. Depaga-chan's defining feature is her sheer size. She'd always dreamed of working at a department store, but had been passed over for employment because of her size. Then, a golden opportunity presented itself: she was asked to work as a hostess for Shinjuku Isetan's owned media, "ISETAN PARK net." Depaga-chan, of course, answered "yes." She is excited about her first customer service experience, and has already shown her impressive bow to site users via YouTube.
The women's magazine "GINZA" was the first to spot this enthusiastic Depaga-chan, and decided to introduce her ahead of other magazines along with this fall's top picks.
"In his book 'Ossu, Tonko-chan,' Katsuki passionately describes his amazement at the celestial maiden statue at Nihonbashi Mitsukoshi and his investment in department store culture. He also created 'Fuchico-chan,' a character whose amusing situation is that of being on the edge of a cup. So, the person in charge of the project approached Tanaka, asking if they could come up with a new initiative that would utilize department stores and allow users to enjoy this situation." After repeated brainstorming sessions, Depaga-chan was born.
Of course, Depaga-chan will be appearing frequently on ISETAN PARK net and IPN SNS in the future. As the new shopping method of internet shopping becomes more prevalent, the goal is to remind customers of the joy of going to a department store. Depaga-chan's role is to share suggestions for enriching your life by enjoying seasonal events and everyday life. We can't wait to see what she'll do in the future.
