A festival of paintings, videos, and installations with the theme of "physical performance" at the Tokyo Metropolitan Museum of Art

Sep 12, 2014

The 5th Tokyo Art Meeting, "In Search of a New Genealogy: Leaps, Traces, and Bodies," will be held at the Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo from September 27 to January 4. The exhibition, themed "physical performance," features a variety of artists exhibiting works and performing performances. Using contemporary techniques such as painting, video, and installation, the exhibition traces the lineage of bodily expression that has been passed down throughout history. Kyogen performer Mansai Nomura serves as general advisor, and events are planned featuring performances such as "Sanbaso" and "Bolero" on a 20-meter-tall stage set constructed with Takatani Shiro's "hyper digital sensibility." Dumb Type, an artist group comprised of members working in various fields including fine arts, theater, music, and video, will reconstruct past performances on themes such as "highly information-driven society" and "gender," presenting a new installation that expresses the group's worldview through sound and video. The theater company Chelfitsch, written and directed by author Toshiki Okada, will present a new installation called "Four Trivial Things You'll See at the Station," which incorporates elements of dance and theater and features a mechanism that separates dialogue from movement.

Douglas Gordon and Philippe Parreno will present their collaborative work "Zidane: A 21st Century Portrait," a two-channel video installation that records soccer player Zinedine Zidane's plays and facial expressions from a Real Madrid match in 2005, and will be exhibited alongside a commentary video by former soccer player Hidetoshi Nakata.

Exhibitors include Chelfitsch, Choy Ka Fai, Damlipe, Douglas Gorton & Philippe Parreno, Teppei Kaneuji, Sharon Lockhart, Noah Eshkol, Henri Matisse, Julie Mehretu, Saburo Murakami, Ernesto Neto, Mansai Nomura, Shintaro Oue + Mirai Moriyama + Shintaro Hirahara, Inbal Pinto & Avshalom Pollack Dance Company, Jackson Pollock, Dentsu Labo Tokyo & Rhizomatiks, Kazuo Shiraga, Atsuko Tanaka, Cy Twombly, and Jiro Yoshihara.
