Brazilian Churrasco Restaurant Barbacoa Opens in Shinjuku

Sep 14, 2014

On September 17th, Japan's largest churrasco restaurant, Barbacoa, will open its Shinjuku branch (7th floor, Rainbow Village, 3-5-4 Shinjuku, Shinjuku-ku). The restaurant will have a floor space of 301.5 square meters and seat 112 people.

"Churrasco" refers to Brazilian barbecue. A staff member, known as a "passador," brings chunks of beef, pork, or chicken skewered on an iron skewer, sprinkles them with salt, and grills them. Customers then slice and serve the meat as they like. Not only is the seasoning simple, but the fact that no oil is used makes it extremely healthy.

Since its founding in São Paulo, Brazil in 1990, Barbacoa has expanded worldwide. Currently, there are seven locations (including affiliated locations) in Brazil and one in Milan, Italy. In Japan, the restaurant opened its first location in Omotesando in 1994, and has since opened locations in Marunouchi, Shibuya, and Shinsaibashi.

Food is served buffet-style, offering a wide variety of dishes, from rare cuts of beef to a salad bar featuring ingredients unique to Brazil. In addition to 15 types of churrasco and approximately 50 salad bar items, the Shinjuku location also offers a dessert buffet, cakes, and soft-serve ice cream.

For dinner, the churrasco course costs 4,444 yen, and the dessert buffet costs 648 yen. For weekday lunch, the churrasco lunch costs 2,778 yen, and the buffet lunch costs 1,667 yen.

In the center of the restaurant, which has a homey interior decorated with wood and brick, is a salad bar corner with a wide variety of dishes. Next to it is a grilling area, where you can enjoy your meal while watching your churrasco being cooked. The back area is equipped with a partition and can be used as a private room for up to 30 people.
