Starbucks Coffee Japan launched the "Starbucks Card Program for Earthquake Recovery Support" on September 10th.
This program was launched in 2012 to support the recovery efforts following the Great East Japan Earthquake. When a prepaid card is purchased for 1,000 yen, 900 yen of the card is charged, and the remaining 100 yen is donated. Additionally, when a product is purchased with the card, Starbucks donates 1% of the purchase amount.
The hummingbird depicted on the card is a character from the South American Andean folktale "The Hummingbird's Drop." In this folktale, as the forest burns and animals flee, the hummingbird tries to put out the fire by carrying water drop by drop in its beak.
Donations collected will be used to operate the Michinoku Future Fund, an organization that supports higher education for children orphaned by the earthquake. Last year, the program donated 19,558,600 yen to the organization. Cards are available for issue until October 31st. Previously issued cards can also be used, and the program will run until December 25th.
