Yohji Yamamoto's Eros Challenges His Own Taboos [15SS Women's]

Sep 30, 2014

Yohji Yamamoto presented his Spring/Summer 2015 women's collection at Paris Fashion Week on September 26th. The first look featured a black-and-white look combining layered fabrics on a strap dress with asymmetrical jackets and shirts. Skin peeks out from between the layers of fabric, creating a threatening atmosphere. Designer Yohji Yamamoto has been challenging his own taboos for the past few seasons, but this collection expresses his own version of eroticism. This marks a new venture for the designer, who has previously pursued femininity and sensuality, emphasized by deliberately concealing the body with masculine clothing. Sheer materials were frequently used within the iconic black look, with jumpsuits and bomber jackets adding a sexy touch. The fabric, made from paper fiber, was softly transparent and its unique firmness created a soft, tailored style. Legs were exposed from the back of the apron dress, and knitwear made from split fabric was worn against the skin. Tailored jackets had cut-out backs and sides, while overalls and coats were unzipped for a precarious look. The checked fabric, sometimes transparent and sometimes revealing only a checkered border, was layered and patchworked with palm-sized chiffon squares over a net-like material. Finding the perfect balance, the piece underwent constant revisions right up until the show. The sheer floral fabric was created by melting the surface of satin. Traditional handcrafts were also incorporated. The jacket was patchworked with vintage handwoven fabric by a Thai ethnic minority. The straps of the overalls were embroidered with metal from India. The final look was a white wedding dress wrapped in a bouquet. This seemingly abrupt final look was a testament to Yohji Yamamoto's signature wit.
