Maison Hermès opens in Shanghai. Opening exhibition is "Horses of Hermès"

Sep 17, 2014

On September 15th, Hermès opened its fifth Maison Hermès in Shanghai. The store is located at 217 Huaihai Middle Road, Huangpu District, Shanghai. The store is housed in a charming red-brick building with a courtyard, which took six years to renovate. It was designed by RDAI, a Paris-based architectural firm led by Denis Montel, who designs Hermès boutiques around the world. Hermès CEO Axel Dumas said, "The marriage of brick, stone, and wood signifies that this architecture connects history and the present. The spacious space and warm lighting will showcase the diversity and richness of Hermès objects." The store spans four floors, covering 1,174 square meters. Floors one through three are sales areas, while the fourth floor houses an event space. The first floor features silk products, bags, jewelry, and perfumes, while the second floor showcases women's and men's ready-to-wear and shoes. Limited-edition items to commemorate the opening include crocodile saddles and alligator bags. The third floor features home collections, tableware, and other interior items, as well as a lounge bar called "La Timbale" by the silverware brand Maison Puiforcat. To commemorate the opening, the fourth floor is hosting an exhibition titled "The Hermès Horse," curated by artist Philippe Dumas. Since opening its first Chinese boutique in Beijing in 1997, Hermès has opened over 20 stores. The Shanghai Maison Hermès is the fifth in the world, following locations in Paris's Faubourg Saint-Honoré, New York's Madison Avenue, Tokyo's Ginza, and South Korea's Dosan Park.
