Paris-based artist Tsuneko Taniuchi's solo exhibition "Micro Events: Tsuneko Taniuchi" will be held at Ginza Maison Hermès Forum from July 18th until September 21st.
This exhibition marks Tsuneko Taniuchi's first solo exhibition in Japan since moving to France. It also marks Forum's first attempt at performance art. The title "Micro Events" refers to the artistic practice Taniuchi has been conducting since 1995, and refers to social and cultural issues at the individual level that occur in parallel with macro-social events. The work is realized by making the relationship between artist, work, and audience explicit and involving the audience at every stage.
Taniuchi will perform a performance every day during the exhibition. "Micro Event No. 45: Six Female Characters + One Woman / Seven Days" will run from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM daily. She will portray six different female characters each day: a waitress, a boxer, a gymnast, a homeless person, a ganguro girl, and a ninja. On Sunday, the seventh day, Taniuchi will host a participatory performance called "Trock," in which visitors can exchange their belongings for "objects" created by the six artists during their performance.
On August 3rd, "Micro Event no. 46 / Wedding, Tokyo" will be held, a Tokyo version of the "Wedding Series," a popular event held at the Centre Pompidou since 2002. The artist will invite people to marry him and attend the ceremony, and approximately 20 weddings will be held simultaneously within the venue. Details will be announced on the official website in early July. The installation will include not only performances but also archival photographs and video footage.
Taniuchi was born in Nishinomiya City, Hyogo Prefecture. He moved to Paris in 1987 and has been active both in Japan and abroad, holding exhibitions at the Centre Pompidou and the Palais de Tokyo.
