The Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo is hosting "Around the World: Michel Gondry," a solo exhibition by film director Michel Gondry, from September 27th. The exhibition, divided into two parts: "Home Movie Factory" and "Around the World 19 Videos," expresses Gondry's unique worldview.
"Home Movie Factory" refers to a filmmaking method invented by Gondry. The venue features 12 film sets, including a coffee shop, back alleys, and a train, where visitors can gather and create short films together. The experience is designed for groups of around 10 people, and involves a three-hour experience that covers everything from scriptwriting to casting, directing, and filming. Props and costumes are provided, allowing visitors to create a variety of films, from romance to suspense, depending on their imagination.
This exhibition first took place in New York in 2008 and has since been held in cities such as Moscow, Sao Paulo, and Paris. If you're unfamiliar with the equipment, instructors are available to help. After filming, a screening will be held, and other artists' works will also be showcased.
Meanwhile, "Around the World in 19 Videos" will showcase 19 of Gondry's films, both old and new, including "Around the World," "Hyperballad," and "Love Letters." A world of visual magic unfolds, utilizing perspective, mirrors, stop motion, and reverse playback.
Other items featured in Gondry's films will also be on display. See the drawings used in his latest film, "Are You Happy?", the water lilies and mysterious cuisine featured in "Mood Indigo," and the one-second time machine featured in "The Quest for Sleep."
During the exhibition, you can enter the museum as many times as you like by presenting your passport ticket. On your fifth visit, the first 100 visitors will receive a gift signed by Gondry.
Michel Gondry works as a film director while also producing television programs, commercials, and music videos. His representative works include "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind," "The Green Hornet," and "We and I." In 2014, his animated conversation with Noam Chomsky, "Are Tall Men Happy?", was screened worldwide.
