Shinjuku Isetan holds an adult cultural festival. An exciting encounter with people, things, and skills

Sep 9, 2014

The "Adult Cultural Festival" will be held from September 24th to 29th at Center Park/The Stage #4 on the 4th floor of the Isetan Shinjuku Main Building, featuring limited edition and custom-made items for adult women who lead high-quality lives and sophisticated business lives, as well as events.

Noteworthy features of this event include collaborations with venture start-up companies with little ties to the department store industry, and artisans who carry on traditions. Factelier, Japan's first e-commerce factory brand launched by Toshio Yamada, and Oh My Glasses, Japan's largest online eyewear retailer, will open their first brick-and-mortar stores. Factelier will offer an "Isetan Limited Edition Trench Coat" (99,360 yen) with a Macmillan Isetan lining. Oh My Glasses will host an order session with Sabae eyeglasses craftsman Susumu Tsuda. Other planned events include an order session featuring Chika Furutajima, CEO of "Lily Lapis Lazuli," the first women's custom-made suit specialty store that opened in Ginza in June 2012; a "Personal Styling Service" (60-minute sessions) where personal concierge Minoru Kuriiwa will provide a complimentary tour of the Shinjuku Isetan building and suggest the perfect fashion items and style; and an order session for Tochigi leather items. Also planned are a wide selection of rare "exquisite" items crafted by Japanese artisans. Isetan buyers will personally visit the workshops of each artisan to select items, and a selection of Kyoto goods by traditional Kyoto artisans will be on sale. Mirror maker Akihisa Yamamoto, who creates "magic mirrors" that project images when light is shone on the mirror surface and reflected off the wall, will also be visiting the store to take orders for the "Christian Magic Mirror" (¥378,000), which caused quite a stir when presented to the Pope in June of this year. The food section will feature low-sugar sweets aimed at health-conscious middle-aged and elderly people and women. The "low-sugar roll cake," created in collaboration between a chef from Hotel Quest Shimizu and a diabetes specialist, was so popular that 150 units were sold out immediately after the store opened last year at Shizuoka Isetan. This time, a "low-sugar cheesecake" will also be available. Additionally, a related event will be held: "Adult Etiquette Seminars," featuring renowned speakers at each session to learn about traditional Japanese culture. "Rakugo: Into the World of Comedy" (September 20th / ¥13,000) will feature the handsome rakugo performer Shunputei Shosho, who has been gaining attention, teaching how to enjoy rakugo through storytelling and free talk. "The Spirit of Harmony to Enrich Your Life" (September 21st / ¥20,000), featuring Ogasawara Keishosai, head of the Ogasawara School of Etiquette, will teach participants etiquette that can be applied to various personal and business situations. "Gagaku and Japanese Music" (September 27th, ¥16,000), hosted by Japanese percussionist Hiromitsu Nishikawa, will feature a gagaku performance and commentary on the lineage of Japanese classical music. "Fun Talks from a Kabuki Sommelier" (September 28th, ¥15,000), hosted by Japan's first kabuki sommelier, Kentaro Okada, will discuss the enjoyment, appeal, and behind-the-scenes stories of kabuki. Both "Adult Taste" courses will be held at the Chinese restaurant "Ishingo" in Park City Isetan II, where participants can savor the charms of Japanese culture while savoring a nine-course meal specially prepared for this event, including shark fin soup.
