Shinjuku Isetan to host "Flea Market" bringing together Japanese technology [Only MI]

Sep 3, 2014

The "JAPAN TEXTILE Only Market @ISETAN" will be held on the first floor of Isetan Shinjuku Main Building from September 10th to 16th.
The event will showcase the appeal of Japan's world-renowned textiles under four themes. Numerous products showcasing Japan's uniquely outstanding techniques and sensibilities will be on display, along with events such as sales of rolls of raw fabric by weight.
The four themes are "Overseas x Japan," "From Japan to the World...World-renowned Dyeing and Weaving Technology," "Japan's Design Prowess," and "Japan's Latest Technology."
The "Overseas x Japan" section will feature three brands, including "SATIO JAPAN" stoles, woven in Ichinomiya City, Aichi Prefecture, using yarn from an Italian spinning manufacturer that also produces luxury brand items, on a low-speed loom that has been in use since the early Showa period, and "SUZUSAN" Arimatsu shibori, created by a designer living in Germany. The Arimatsu shibori dyeing technique, produced mainly in the Arimatsu region of Aichi Prefecture, is highly acclaimed worldwide and is known for providing its technology to haute couture fashion houses.

The "From Japan to the World...World-Class Dyeing and Weaving Technology" section features products from five brands, including Satosen'i, a mohair knitwear manufacturer in Yamagata, Tohoku, and Yushisha, a leading successor to Tango's Fujifu (fuji cloth) tradition. Both companies are purchased by high-end brands.

The "Japan's Design Prowess" section introduces four brands that have teamed up with lecturers and associate professors from several art universities in Japan to develop products.

The "Japan's Latest Technology" section showcases the Inkjet Printing Innovation Project, or "IPIP," for short. You can see for yourself the high-quality reproduction capabilities of Shima Seiki's new design solution system, the APEX3.

The products featured range from ¥10,000 to ¥50,000, with small items like hair accessories starting at ¥3,000. During the event, designer Tomi Ninomiya of Ninomiya Textile, who is participating in the "Japan's Pride Design" project, will be invited to participate in a paid handkerchief foil printing and coloring experience event. The event will take about 40 minutes to an hour and costs 3,000 yen.
