Commemorating the 200th anniversary of Gyokusendo, an intangible cultural property of Niigata Prefecture that preserves the art of hammered copperware, the "Gyokusendo 200th Anniversary Exhibition: Hammering. Strikes Time" will be held at the Pola Museum Annex in Ginza, Tokyo, from June 4th to 19th.
Gyokusendo's copperware becomes even more beautiful with the passage of time ("strikes time"), as artisans hammer the copperware. This exhibition does not value the past, which is the appreciation of history and tradition, but rather the future, which grows with time, showcasing the charm of Gyokusendo, whose colors deepen and lustre increase with the passage of time.
The exhibition will feature over 20 of Gyokusendo's masterpieces, from its founding in 1816 to its latest creations in 2016. Also on display will be "MOON," a hammered Japanese piece made with mokumegane, a unique Japanese metalworking technique passed down since the Edo period. It was specially created for this occasion. Related events, such as gallery talks, are also scheduled to be held during the exhibition.
