Legendary secondhand clothing store Dept. opens at Shinjuku Isetan and Ginza Mitsukoshi for a limited time! Pre-sale of one-of-a-kind remade items

May 8, 2016

The legendary second-hand clothing store DEPT will open a pop-up shop, "Utopian second-hand DEPT®," from May 9th to 17th at Center Park/The Stage #2 on the second floor of the Isetan Shinjuku Main Building, and from May 18th to 24th at the Le Place Promotion Space on the third floor of Ginza Mitsukoshi. Dept first opened its predecessor in San Francisco, USA, in the early 1980s, before moving to Tokyo and expanding across Japan. While it closed in 2011, much to the regret of many fans, it reopened in Nakameguro, Tokyo, in April 2015. This pop-up store coincides with Isetan Mitsukoshi's "Global Green Campaign," which focuses on the coexistence of people and nature. The "second-hand" in the title refers to secondhand or worn clothing, while the "utopia" expresses a desire for a world where people cherish clothes for a long time. The venue will feature new collaboration items with chico, special items selected specifically for the pop-up store, as well as new items from mother and VTOPIA. One-of-a-kind remade items, which will be available exclusively at Isetan Mitsukoshi, will also be on display. For women, the "DEPT PATCHES SWEAT TOPS" (18,000 yen) is a top made by stitching together sweatshirt fabrics of different colors and textures, and now features a boatneck version perfect for the upcoming season. Also on offer are the "VINTAGE FRENCH BUCKLE BANGLE" (12,000-19,000 yen), a beautiful bangle featuring a combination of deadstock buckle parts imported from France and a vibrantly colored clear belt, and the "VINTAGE SCARF SKIRT" (13,000-15,000 yen), a skirt made from two vintage souvenir scarves joined together.

In the unisex section, four new colors will be available for the "GARMENT DYE THERMAL TOPS" (5,000 yen), a piece-dyed thermal top that has been popular since its release. Also, the "DENIM PATCHES PT" (20,000 yen) denim pants feature beautiful shades of indigo created with denim patches, each with a different patch and degree of fading, and are available in men's to unisex sizes. Resizing models are also available for those who prefer a tighter fit.

In addition, the Isetan Shinjuku store will be decorated with neon signs designed by founder Seiji Nagai, allowing customers to enjoy shopping in a space that recreates the same atmosphere as a Dept. physical store.
