The special exhibition "Haruki Murakami and Illustrators - Maki Sasaki, Ayumu Ohashi, Makoto Wada, Mizumaru Anzai" will be held at the Chihiro Art Museum, Tokyo from May 25th to August 7th.
This is the first exhibition to focus on the theme of Haruki Murakami and illustrators. It will introduce the relationship between Murakami's writings, which span a wide range of genres including novels, essays, translations, and picture books, and the works of four illustrators - Maki Sasaki, Ayumu Ohashi, Makoto Wada, and Mizumaru Anzai - who confront each other with their own unique styles using different materials and techniques. The exhibition will feature the first public showing of works by Maki Sasaki, who illustrated the covers of Murakami's debut novel, "Hear the Wind Sing," as well as the covers of his follow-up novels, "Pinhole 1973," and the early trilogy, "A Wild Sheep Chase," as well as "The Sheepman's Christmas." It will also feature the works of Ayumu Ohashi, who created the copperplate engravings for the essay "Murakami Radio," which ran intermittently in the magazine "anan" from 2000 to 2012. Also on display will be works by Makoto Wada, who has designed the covers and book covers for Murakami's translated literary works and has collaborated with him on music-themed projects, and Mizumaru Anzai, who has collaborated with Murakami on numerous projects, including the "Murakami Asahi-do" series, essays, short stories, and travelogues.
