Photographer Takashi Homma showcases his New York-themed works at Shinjuku Isetan

May 24, 2016

From May 25th to 31st, Isetan Shinjuku will open a zone on The Stage on the first floor of the main building to showcase and introduce the work of photographer Takashi Homma.

This exhibition, held as part of the store's New York Week during the same period, will feature works from Takashi Homma's Pinhole series, featuring New York as its subject, on display and for sale. The works featured in this exhibition were taken by Homma using a pinhole camera in a hotel or high-rise building on a street corner, in an attempt to "photograph the city through the city." The photographs were taken using a technique known as camera obscura, in which images are projected onto a wall through a small hole in a darkened room.

The works on display are conceptual, focusing on iconic objects like water towers and design-driven elements such as numbers and letters, seemingly intentionally distancing themselves from the documentary and passive nature of photography. Limited edition T-shirts and iPhone cases in collaboration with NEEDLE DESIGN, featuring the above works, will also be on sale at the venue.

Takashi Homma was born in Tokyo in 1962. In 1999, he won the 24th Kimura Ihei Award for his photo book "Tokyo Suburbs." In April 2016, the publishing company MACK published "THE NARCISSISTIC CITY," a collection of works from his Camera Obscura series.
