Each bookstore will act as a concierge, recommending "must-read books" to FASHION HEADLINE readers. Every Thursday, we'll introduce a recommended book from each branch of the art bookstore "NADiff." This time, we'll be introducing the Aichi/Nagoya branch, NADiff Aichi (1-13-2 Higashisakura, Higashi-ku, Nagoya, Aichi Prefecture, Aichi Arts Center B2F).

■ "Sasaki Ai Landscape Stories"

This book is the first collection of works by artist Sasaki Ai, published in conjunction with the "21st Century Art Project: Sasaki Ai Four Songs" exhibition (April 2014, Bernard Buffet Museum, Shizuoka). Known for her vibrantly colored paintings and drawings featuring densely repetitive lines, Sasaki also creates book illustrations and murals using royal icing (sugar, egg whites, and lemon), a material used in sugar crafts. Since 2005, Ai Sasaki has been creating large-scale white murals made from ice sculptures in various locations both in Japan and abroad. These murals are created at the locations where she resides and generally remain there only for the duration of the exhibition. Inspired by local myths and stories, she fuses them with the landscapes unfolding before her, depicting trees shrouded in night mist, ships returning to the forest, and migratory birds in simple forms. These decorative lines, arranged like geometric patterns, envelop the viewer, creating a sense of translucence and tranquility, as if floating in a dream. The cover of this collection also features a special treatment that recreates the world of the white murals. Ai Sasaki will also be participating in the Aichi Triennale 2016, marking its third year. It will be interesting to see what kind of works the artist will develop from the landscapes she encountered in Aichi.
