An exhibition exploring Edo trends through ukiyo-e prints, "Sharaku and Toyokuni: Beauty and Appearance in Edo," will be held at the Kobe Fashion Museum from June 18th to August 14th.
During the Edo period, ukiyo-e prints were used as bromides to give viewers a close look at favorite actors and popular girls. This exhibition features 140 ukiyo-e prints, focusing on Toshusai Sharaku, who made a dashing appearance and then suddenly disappeared, and his rival Utagawa Toyokuni, who expanded the Utagawa school, which later became the largest school in the ukiyo-e world. Through ukiyo-e prints, visitors can learn about the fashionable gestures, colorful kimonos, and delicate patterns and designs of the time, and experience the bustling atmosphere of Edo.
