NILøS, a new label from Third Stone, the developer of JULIUS, debuts with the 2015-16 Autumn/Winter collection. A pop-up shop will open in the promotion space on the second floor of the Isetan Men's Building from August 12th to 17th. Directed by Yuji Takahashi, a member of JULIUS' creative team, and working with designer Tatsuro Horikawa, NILøS creates products with a philosophy distinct from JULIUS's underground worldview. Centered around the two themes of identity and essence, NILøS reinterprets these concepts through NILøS's unique perspective, embracing an urban approach. Like JULIUS, graphic design is at the core of the brand's creations, transposing this expression into clothing and a unique worldview. NILøS's brand concept is "a state of non-ideology, or the boundary between the individual and the individual," placing conceptual and philosophical themes at its core. This conceptual theme can also be seen in the brand's name. The "ø" in the brand name is a mathematical symbol for a set with no elements, or the empty set. Nils' definition of "ø" is a state in which all principles, ideologies, and other patterns necessary for human life have been abolished—a state of non-ideology and thoughtlessness. What remains is the purest individual will, the only uniqueness—a respect for the natural individual differences that should exist in the expression of life.
Rather than consciously striving to create individuality, Takahashi and Horikawa express the discoveries and realizations that arise from their conceptual explorations. They believe that pure individuality and will reside in the atmosphere and texture that unconsciously exudes. Therefore, unnecessary decoration has been stripped away as much as possible, focusing on leaving ample space for the atmosphere and individuality to be sensed. The color palette is primarily monotone, with a black and white base. The lineup will center on a variety of products, not just apparel, but also music and culture.
The pop-up shop at Isetan Men's will also be selling accessories. One standout item is the iPhone case "FLAP6 ver.2," a collaboration with CLAUSTRUM, a metal product label based in Ginza, Tokyo. Made from stainless steel, the visual design embodies the brand's philosophy of "stripping down."
