Azuma Makoto's flower art takes over the cover of FRAME magazine, marking the first Japanese work to do so in six years since Ito Masaru's Roen

Jan 10, 2013

The cover of Dutch interior design magazine FRAME's 90th issue (JAN/FEB) features floral work by flower artist Azuma Makoto. This is the first time a Japanese has appeared on the cover in six years, since issue 55 featured the "Roen Nakameguro store," designed by Ito Masaru's Ito Masaru Design Project/SEI.

The work is included in the collection "Encyclopedia of Flowers" (Seigensha), published last July. Photographs were taken by Azuma's partner, Shunsuke Shiiki, who runs the haute couture flower shop "Jardin des Fleurs" with Azuma. Frame features over a dozen pages of flowers and plants, including other works from the encyclopedia and interviews with art directors Hara Kenya and Azuma Makoto.

FRAME, launched in 1997, is a design magazine showcasing shop interiors and products from around the world. In Japan, it is sold at Aoyama Book Center and Shimada Foreign Books. The magazine also features many fashion shops, with past covers including London select shop LN-CC and a pop-up shop by Richard Chai of the American design duo SNARCHITECTURE.
