Smart Illumination Yokohama 2016, an international art event that attempts to create a new nightscape, will be held for five days from November 2nd to 6th at Zou-no-hana Park and other locations in Yokohama. Smart Illumination Yokohama is an annual event that features a main "Art Program," in which artists utilize cutting-edge environmental technology to create "another Yokohama nightscape." In addition, the event also features a variety of initiatives by companies, artists, facilities, shopping districts, and others. This year, the sixth annual event, features two popular international artists, Barbara Cadet from France and Lu Yang from China, who will be exhibiting their original works for the first time in Japan. Additionally, imaginative works by 16 artists from Japan and abroad, including Kyota Takahashi, who has been participating since the first event, will be on display, illuminating the Yokohama nightscape. The "FutureCity Yokohama Smart Illumination Award," in which young creators and students compete with their ideas, will also be held. This year, 13 works will be entered in the general category and 8 in the school category. In addition to the outdoor exhibition at Zou-no-hana Park, this year an indoor venue will be set up at the Yokohama Port Opening Memorial Hall, which is celebrating its 99th anniversary, with plans to display a variety of light art works in the underground space, which is normally closed to the public.

In addition, a "Collaboration Program" will be held again this year, with participation from companies, organizations, facilities, shopping districts, and more. The project aims to match artists with companies that possess cutting-edge environmental technology and promote collaboration between participating companies, and this year a part of the electricity used at the venue will be provided with the cooperation of a company that has its own unique energy storage system.
