"Roppongi Art Night" is coming soon! Kohei Nawa's "Forest" appears in the streets of Roppongi

Oct 8, 2016

The main program for Roppongi Art Night 2016, an art festival held in the district of Roppongi, has finally been announced. The main program artist is sculptor Kohei Nawa, whose works will be on display from October 21st to 23rd at Roppongi Hills Arena, Tokyo Midtown, and the National Art Center, Tokyo.

This year's main program will feature a "forest" symbolizing the dawn of Roppongi culture, appearing at Roppongi Hills Arena, Tokyo Midtown, and the National Art Center, Tokyo. Kohei Nawa created it in collaboration with Seijun Nishihata, a plant hunter who travels the world in search of rare plants, and Daisy Balloon, a unit that creates sculptural works with bold ideas that overturn conventional concepts of balloons.

At Roppongi Hills Arena, a mature forest will emerge, featuring a wide variety of trees collected by Nishihata from around the world. Within this forest, a scene will be depicted where "Ether," a sculpture expressing the relationship between humans, gravity, time, and space, meets "White Deer," a work based on a white deer motif. Buoys used in Ishinomaki fishing will also be placed on the exhibit, creating a fantastical scene of marine life intermingling with the urban forest.

At Tokyo Midtown, numerous cacti and other succulents wrapped in balloon objects will be displayed. They resemble an incubator, supporting plant growth and promoting regeneration through balloon cocoons, and a haven for tiny, immature forest spirits sleeping in incubators to regain their vitality. At the National Art Center, Tokyo, withered trees evocative of the end of life, as well as driftwood and buoys that have drifted across the vast ocean, create a desolate hill. On this land, the "People of the Wind" wander, pulling Nawa's sculpture "Cloud Cart," carrying a glimpse of life within them, creating a scene reminiscent of a passage from myth. The illuminations will be on display from 5:30 PM to midnight on October 21st, and from 11:00 AM on the 22nd to 6:00 AM on the 23rd.
