Japanese confectionery shop HIGASHIYA will once again be selling a limited-edition "Osechi Sweets" (¥20,000) perfect for the New Year. Reservations are open until December 13th.

Osechi ryori is a feast eaten during the New Year, praying for a good harvest, safety for the family, and prosperity for descendants. Higashiya's "Osechi Sweets" offers 12 tiers of sweets, each with the hope of bringing about successive auspicious events. The offerings, packed in a paulownia wood box, include the lustrous "Kingyoku" sweets, made with sake (the origin of the character for "rooster" in the Chinese character for "rooster"), the zodiac sign for next year, as well as sweets made with honey-boiled vegetables and fruits, and raw rakugan (rice crackers) shaped like sea bream, perfect for auspicious occasions.
