Listening to Tokyo on Cassette Tape: Junichi Matsuzaki Exhibition at Pass the Baton Omotesando

May 9, 2014

The PASS THE BATON GALLERY in Omotesando Hills, Tokyo, will host "TOKYO SAMPLING," an exhibition by electronics collector Junichi Matsuzaki, from May 15 to June 8.

Matsuzaki erased the historical records on cassette tapes and recorded the sounds of modern Tokyo. By using products from the past to record the present in analog form and preserve it for the future, he aims to counter the digital age of copying. Each unique piece features a Polaroid photograph of the collection site with handwritten information about the sound capture. Boomboxes from the 1970s and 1980s will also be on display and for sale at the venue.

A talk event will be held on the 22nd, featuring Matsuzaki and GINZA Editor-in-Chief Toshiko Nakajima. Moderated by Pass the Baton CEO Masamichi Toyama, the talk will explore cassette tapes, boomboxes, and the surrounding culture of the 1970s and 1980s.

Matsuzaki has had hobbies such as radio building and amateur radio since childhood, and after graduating from design school he worked as an in-house designer for 20 years. In 2003 he founded "Design Underground" and has continued to promote the appeal of vintage home appliances, with a focus on radio cassette players.
