First large-scale exhibition of kokeshi-collecting architect and editor George Nelson to be held in Japan

May 13, 2014

The first large-scale exhibition in Japan featuring George Nelson, one of the most iconic American designers of the late 20th century, will open at the Meguro Museum of Art in Tokyo on July 15th. This exhibition is part of the international traveling exhibition "George Nelson: Architect, Writer, Designer, Educator," organized by the Vitra Design Museum in Germany, and will be held exclusively at the Meguro Museum of Art in Japan. The exhibition will feature approximately 300 items, centered around the Vitra Design Museum's Nelson collection, including vintage furniture including early productions and prototypes, model trains, and a documentary film from Moscow about the 1959 American World's Fair. Other exhibits will include materials related to Herman Miller, where Nelson served as head of design for 25 years, and materials related to Japan. Nelson was born in Connecticut in 1908. He earned a degree in architecture from Yale University in 1931 and studied at the American Academy in Rome before establishing his own architectural firm in New York. After the war, he discovered the talents of Charles and Ray Eames and Isamu Noguchi at Herman Miller. While creating modern furniture based on the concept of "design as a system," which takes into account the interrelationship between profit and work, he also worked as a writer, exhibition designer, and photographer. He also had a deep connection with Japan, contributing an article about his experience during a month-long stay in Japan to an American magazine, and is known for collecting traditional kokeshi dolls.
