Zippers and Sneakers: Modernity and Sneakers [14-15 AW Trend 5]

May 5, 2014

What will next season's "a la mode" be? We look back at the 2014-15 Autumn/Winter Paris Collection and analyze the upcoming trends, taking into account historical background. This time, we look at zippers and sneakers, which have become a luxury item.

Fashion trendsetters have always taken new steps by shattering preconceived notions. Elsa Schiaparelli shocked the world by introducing zippers to haute couture for the first time. The act of undoing a zipper later became associated with sexiness, making it a symbol of sexiness. In the 1970s, it became a symbol of punk style.

Nicolas Ghesquière, who became artistic director of Louis Vuitton, made extensive use of zippers in his 2014-15 Autumn/Winter collection. Following on from haute couture, Chanel also continued to wear sneakers. The emergence of zippers and sneakers, with their unpretentious casual feel, is giving a new value to luxury, which was previously directly associated with elegance. Karl Lagerfeld, who was the first to collaborate with H&M, has even mastered the joys of fast fashion, and by incorporating a casual mindset into luxury, he expresses modernity, so keep an eye on Nicolas's new challenge.

  • Louis Vuitton. A front-zip dress that combines a jersey training-style top with a leather skirt at the waist. A sophisticated, sporty look.
  • Chanel. Even though it has been 60 years since Coco first introduced the suit, Chanel suits give a fresh surprise with a new look every season. All coats and jackets have zippers for a casual look.
  • Following on from haute couture, Chanel wore sneakers in every look. Casual, pop, and playful styles, such as boot-style sneakers made from the same tweed as the suit, are the current trend.
  • Balenciaga. Zippers were developed to simplify putting on and taking off clothes, but sometimes they become more decorative than functional. Balenciaga uses zippers extensively to create a sharp and sporty impression.
  • Dries Van Noten. The diagonal zipper on the coat is more of a design element than a function. The vertical zipper on the pants gives off a punkish vibe. Both pieces have a casual chic finish.
  • Dior pumps made from the same material as sneaker soles
  • Dior: The laces on the sides and back of the garments are made from sneaker laces, giving a sporty touch to the classic and elegant couture.
  • Celine. Thick-soled ankle boots are a great way to dress down your feet. Pair them with feminine clothing to create a stylish contrast.
