Along with fashion, we want to incorporate trends into our makeup. We asked Sadafumi Ito, International Lead Makeup Stylist at NARS, who has worked on makeup for numerous runway shows, about the key points of this year's spring/summer makeup and what trends he recommends for Japanese women.
Makeup that brings out a woman's natural beauty was common in the SS14 collection. "For blush, use a cream product and spread it on your cheeks with your fingers for a rough finish. For lips, don't line your lips; instead, take lipstick with your fingers and dab it on. I recommend brighter colors for both," says Ito. NARS's "Matte Multiple" Color Stick can be used on both lips and cheeks. It provides a vibrant matte finish when applied as is, or a translucent color when wetted. It's a popular item that was highly praised backstage.
For base makeup, Ito prefers a natural look, moisturizing thoroughly and then using concealer to cover imperfections, then finishing with face powder. The key to creating a perfect look is eyebrows. "For a cool, mature look, use bold, defined eyebrows. For a soft, feminine look, use soft, rounded eyebrows." At shows featuring popular brands like 3.1 Phillip Lim and Alexander Wang, where NARS provided makeup, natural eyebrows were shaped with mascara to create a silhouette. When asked about upcoming fall/winter beauty trends, she replied, "I'm interested in glitter-based eye and lip makeup." Why not try out these trends early? After returning to Japan from New York in 2001, Ito joined NARS Japan. She began her career as a makeup artist at the counter of NARS' first store in Japan (Isetan Shinjuku), and has worked in magazines and backstage. She assumed her current position in 2010, and continues to work backstage at fashion weeks around the world.
Ito says she finds inspiration in traveling abroad and meeting people with different values. She left a message for Japanese women: "I think it's great that you have a strong desire for beauty. Don't be afraid to try something different from others."
