Otsuka SINCE 1872 (hereafter "Otsuka SINCE"), a brand of Otsuka Shoes, a shoe manufacturer purveyor to the Imperial Household, has collaborated with forest conservation organization More Trees to release a pair of slip-on shoes (priced at ¥30,000) made with wild Ezo deer leather at the Isetan Men's Building as part of the Mitsukoshi Isetan Group's "Global Green" campaign. In recent years, the population of Japanese deer, including Ezo deer, has skyrocketed due to conservation policies and a lack of natural predators. They are now designated as "pests." More Trees distributes leather from culled Ezo deer, returning profits to the forests. Learning of this, a men's shoe buyer at Isetan approached Otsuka Shoes about making shoes using the leather, leading to the creation of this collection.
A buyer in charge of men's shoes said, "Deerskin has a unique texture and softness, and is easy to get used to and feels good against the skin. However, because of its softness, it is extremely difficult to create shoes with a silhouette that can be worn with a jacket. This time, we asked Otsuka Shoes to spend over six months repeatedly making prototypes."
Also, because the material for these shoes is wild deer, there are scratches from vegetation and bullet holes, so very little of the leather could be used for the product, but by limiting the quantity and the number of stores selling it, they were able to make it available for sale.
Available in two colors: black and brown. Sizes range from 24.5 to 27cm.
