Sanyo Sancho x more trees release Ezo deer driving shoes

Dec 6, 2013

Sanyo Shokai's men's shoe brand, Sanyo Sancho, is collaborating with the forest conservation organization More Trees to release items made with Ezo deer leather for the Spring/Summer 2014 season. Ezo deer are a species of Japanese deer. While once on the brink of extinction, their numbers have surged in recent years due to conservation policies and the extinction of wolves. They are now considered a pest that ravages forests. The Ministry of the Environment estimates that the deer population will reach 5 million nationwide (excluding Hokkaido) by fiscal year 2025. Given this situation, most deer materials used in Japan are imported. Sanyo Shokai aims to change this situation. Seeking new ways to utilize deer materials in Japan, they have created driving shoes that take advantage of the softness and flexibility of deerskin. The lineup includes three styles, including slip-ons and tassel loafers with summer fur uppers. The shoes will be available in 12 colors, including navy, brown, white, and red. The soles are made by Vibram of Italy, but everything else is made in Japan. Prices start at 37,800 yen. In addition to shoes, the brand will also produce tote bags and clutch bags. They also plan to sell suede items. "This isn't an endeavor that will end with just one season. We want to continue it in the future," said Shinpei Saruwatari, deputy manager of the Business Planning Group in the Men's Wear Planning Division at Sanyo Shokai. From Autumn/Winter 2014 onward, the brand hopes to expand into gloves, coats, and other items. Sanyo Shokai collaborated with more trees at Art Fair 2011, creating an art piece with contemporary artist Takashi Kuribayashi.
