Moët Hennessy Diageo K.K. (MHD) will release "Port Ellen 40 Year Old," the longest-aged official bottle from the Port Ellen distillery, which closed in 1983, on June 23, 2021.

Port Ellen is a single malt whisky that was formerly produced at the Port Ellen distillery on Islay, known as the "holy land of Scotch whisky" among the six major Scotch whisky producing regions. It gained the support of many fans due to its high quality, but was sadly closed in 1983. The malt whisky produced at Port Ellen Distillery has become increasingly rare over the years due to the reduction in the number of barrels stored after multiple releases and the long aging period, and is now referred to as a "phantom whisky." The newly released "Port Ellen 40 Year Old" is also a legendary masterpiece, bottled from malt whisky that has been carefully stored even after the distillery closed. Port Ellen Distillery is also aiming to reopen this year in 2021, attracting the attention of whisky lovers around the world.

■The theme of Port Ellen's 40 years, "9 ROGUE CASKS"

The theme of this rarest Port Ellen, aged for 40 years, the longest for an official bottle, and limited to 1,380 bottles worldwide, is "9 ROGUE CASKS."
In 1979, before the Port Ellen distillery closed, spirits were identified that possessed distinctive and unusual flavor characteristics that differed from the typical Port Ellen spirit. However, these spirits did not meet the needs of the blender at the time, so the casks were marked and carefully stored for further aging and blending in the future. Now, 40 years later, Master Blender Craig Wilson has selected nine casks from that unorthodox cellar to create the Port Ellen 40 Year Old. By skillfully blending four American oak hogsheads and five European oak butts, he has created a new Port Ellen unlike anything seen at the distillery before.

Four American Oak Barrel Characteristics
CASK 1469 - Grassy, Oily, Cinnamon, Herbal
CASK 1680 - Grassy, Fruit, Tropical Fruit, Vanilla
CASK 1747 - Fruit, Leather, Tropical Fruit, Grassy
CASK 5176 - Tangerine, Cinnamon, Creamy

Five European Oak Barrel Characteristics
CASK 4890 - Herbal, Floral, Grassy, Spicy
CASK 4913 - Cinnamon, Fruit, Savory, Leather
CASK 4914 - Herbal, Cinnamon, Ripe Fruit
CASK 6806 - Grassy, Herbal, Raisin, Confectionery
CASK 6816 - Menthol, Medicinal, Fruit

Port Ellen 40 Year Old Tasting Notes
