The "David Hockney Prints" exhibition will be held at the Machida City Museum of Graphic Arts in Tokyo from October 1 to November 23.
David Hockney is one of the leading contemporary British artists. Born in Bradford, Yorkshire, in 1937, he graduated with honors from the Royal College of Art in London in 1962, where he made a spectacular debut and was hailed as a "flagship of Pop Art." After moving his base of operations to Los Angeles, his style underwent a dramatic transformation, producing a succession of outstanding works bursting with bright light and rich color.
Hockney's creative range extends beyond painting to printmaking, photography, and stage design, and his brilliant development always attracts attention. Printmaking, in particular, is an important genre he has been creating continuously since his teens, skillfully capturing moments from life, from casual scenes in his home to portraits of family and friends and travel scenery. Hockney also produces introspective yet witty series, including autobiographical narratives and homages to Picasso. He has collaborated extensively with printmakers and employed innovative techniques that transcend traditional printmaking, using facsimiles, color copies, and computers. This exhibition explores the appeal and secrets of Hockney's expression through approximately 150 prints, primarily from the Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo's collection. The exhibition will feature lectures and gallery talks by curators, as well as a workshop focusing on lithography techniques, offering a hands-on workshop in the studio after viewing the works, and related events offering a chance to observe the lithography process. For more details, please visit the Machida City Museum of Graphic Arts website. This exhibition will travel to the Iwaki City Art Museum (Fukushima) from June 10 to July 17, 2017.
