For its Cruise 2022 show, Dior chose Athens, the birthplace of Western civilization and European art. In this city dedicated to the mythological goddess Athena, Maria Grazia Chiuri reinterpreted her previous creations and reinterpreted house codes, such as the peplos. In this spirit, Maria Grazia Chiuri created a vast map of Greece, drawing on characters and images imbued with unique insight and poetry, from the works of Giorgio de Chirico to a collection of vases by Alexandre Iolas, decorated with grappling wrestlers. Sketches by artist Pietro Ruffo highlighted their monumental silhouettes, camouflaged as sportswear pieces. A series of white pantsuits, evocative of styles once worn by Marlene Dietrich, struck a delicate balance between classicism and freedom. Oversized houndstooth was Greekized, the "cannage" motif took on a new abstraction, and Dior Star appeared. Inside the iconic Panathenaic Stadium, where the show took place, heritage and modernity met, allowing for greater freedom of movement and unrestricted performance.
