Borrowing Checks and Pinstripes from British Gentlemen [13AW Women's Trends Summary - Vol. 2]

Jul 1, 2013

We'll be exploring this fall/winter trend by analyzing new collections from popular brands using 15 keywords. Our second installment is "Checks & Pinstripes."

Many brands are incorporating houndstooth, glen plaid, and pinstripes, staples of British gentleman style, into their designs. Materials include wool and tweed, and colors include gray, beige, and monochrome. These classic designs are used in tailored styles like suits and coats, making the most of their classic image.

Comme des Garçons, whose theme is the infinite possibilities of tailoring, used classic men's suit patterns like houndstooth and pinstripes as emblematic elements of tailoring. Based on a jacket and pants suit style, corsages and ruffles add new volume.

Graph checks, reminiscent of graph lines, were featured in Sacai's collection. They combined different materials, including leather, lace, and velvet, showcasing their signature hybrid style.

Lanvin, inspired by "Parisian fashion," presented a glen plaid set. Glen check is a check pattern that combines large and small houndstooth patterns. The oversized jacket, with its wide neckline, suggests a tailored look that is unique to women.

Stella McCartney, created by Stella, who has experience training at Savile Row, the holy land of British tailoring, has created dresses with navy and gray checks and pinstripes that add a touch of drape. A single piece can complete a feminine yet masculine style.
