Toray's sales of "Green Innovation Products in the Textile Business" surpass 100 billion yen in fiscal 2012

Jul 23, 2013
Toray announced on the 18th that sales of its "Green Innovation Products in the Textile Business (hereinafter, GR Products)" reached 104.7 billion yen in fiscal year 2012. This represents an increase of approximately 27% compared to the previous fiscal year. GR Products accounted for approximately 17% of the consolidated sales of the textile business, and approximately 23% of the company's total GR product sales.

Incidentally, Toray Group's total sales of GR Products in fiscal year 2012 increased 5% from the previous year to 450.4 billion yen. This marks the third consecutive year of record highs, and the company has set a target of 500 billion yen for fiscal year 2013.

Toray defines "Green Innovation Products" as products that meet nine criteria that contribute to solving global environmental, resource, and energy issues throughout the product's lifecycle, from raw materials to use and disposal. For GR textile products, the "energy-saving" category includes warm and cool materials, the "new energy" category includes PPS binder yarn for hybrid and electric vehicle motors, and the "biomass-derived" category includes biomass-based polyester and biomass-based nylon.

The strong sales of GR textile products were due to a roughly 30% increase in "energy-saving" materials, primarily warm and cool materials that allow for comfortable living even when adjusting the temperature of heating and cooling. With energy conservation awareness expected to continue, the company expects demand for "energy-saving materials" to further expand. The company also plans to focus on sales of "biomass-derived" fibers, including partially bio-based polyester, which will begin full-scale sales in the second half of the year.

Sales of GR textile products are expected to reach 130 billion yen in fiscal year 2013. Toray established its dedicated "Textile Green Innovation Office (Textile GR Office)" in fiscal year 2011. Since then, the GR textile business has continued to grow steadily. We will continue to vigorously push forward with projects while integrating the expansion of existing businesses with the development of new businesses.
