IKEA launches limited edition LOKALT collection that combines contemporary design and traditional craftsmanship

Release Date:2021.06.01

IKEA Japan, the Japanese subsidiary of IKEA, a Swedish home furnishing company with a vision of "creating a better everyday life for the many people," will begin selling the LOKALT limited edition collection, created in collaboration with four contemporary designers from Jordan, Thailand, and India and local social businesses, in IKEA stores nationwide and the IKEA online store from June 1, 2021.

The LOKALT limited edition collection is a vibrant collection of handmade textiles, ceramics, and other items inspired by regional traditions. The designers were Tania Haddad, based in Amman, Jordan; Ploypan Theerachai, a design duo based in Delhi, India; Decha Archjananun, based in Bangkok, Thailand; and Akanksha Deo, an in-house IKEA designer based in Delhi, India. Each piece, including cushion covers, rugs, baskets, and bowls, showcases a fusion of local traditions and modern handicraft techniques.

IKEA promotes social entrepreneurship initiatives and works with social entrepreneurs to support the livelihoods and job creation of artisans with limited work opportunities. This collection is part of this effort, and IKEA works with social businesses such as Jordan River Foundation in Jordan, Doi Tung in Thailand, and Industree and Diamond carpets in India. The limited edition LOKALT collection is produced by local social businesses and each piece is handmade by skilled artisans.

Maria O'Brian, Creative Leader for Range & Supply at IKEA, says: "LOKALT is a modern and vibrant collection that celebrates traditional handicrafts. The products are full of quirky designs that speak to the places where they are made. The ceramics pay homage to Thai food serving techniques, while home textiles from Amman offer a glimpse into everyday life there, and the expressive shapes on the cushion covers and rugs are inspired by Indian traditions."

Commenting on the collaboration, Neelam Chhiber, Managing Director of India's Industry Craft Foundation, said, "There are very few social enterprises generating livelihoods, and they need to be scaled up. We have to partner with big companies because otherwise we won't be able to scale. We need the power of big companies. That's why our relationship with IKEA is so important."

IKEA's Social Entrepreneurship Initiative aims to improve everyday lives for vulnerable groups by creating long-term job opportunities and livelihoods for them through business partnerships. The initiative focuses on mutual learning and building on each other's strengths. It combines IKEA design with traditional local techniques to co-create unique, affordable handicraft products. Through the Social Entrepreneurship Initiative, IKEA has been developing products with artisans since 2013. To date, more than 30,000 jobs have been created for artisans and small farmers, and the journey continues.

The LOKALT limited edition collection is scheduled to go on sale in 25 countries and regions and 294 stores in June 2021.
