In conjunction with Shinjuku's annual summer event, the 2013 Shinjuku Eisa Festival, the "Menso-re! Great Okinawa Exhibition" will be held at Isetan Shinjuku from July 24th to 29th. The theme of the 19th "Great Okinawa Exhibition" is "Okinawa Now!" The highlights include cafes and bakeries selected by Okinawa Ichiba, a food and lifestyle magazine from Okinawa. Making their debut this year are "Pipachi Kitchen," opened by a couple from Ishigaki Island, and "Pain de Kaito," a bakery in Nago that offers baguettes made with natural yeast and breads made with island vegetables. "Pipachi" is a type of island pepper native to the Yaeyama region, characterized by a sweet cinnamon-like aroma and a mild spiciness. A lunch plate featuring Yanbaru young chicken and island vegetables (limited to 200 per day) will be available exclusively at the event. Enjoy lassi with floating hibiscus jelly and a cafe filled with Miyakojima mangoes (limited to 100 per day).
The cafe, produced by Kazufumi Miyazawa of THE BOOM, will also offer Okinawa soba noodles without soup, an adaptation of Ishigaki Island's soul food "karasoba," as well as original textile goods. Many Isetan-exclusive items will also be on display, including mango popcorn and chilled purple sweet potato dorayaki.
In addition to food, exhibitors include "PAIKAJI," popular for its aloha shirt-inspired apparel, "Double Volante," custom denim shop, "Yadokari Kobo," glass bead necklace maker, and "Okinawa no Kaze," maker of Ryukyu canvas tote bags.
Okinawa artists will also perform live on the rooftop, along with Orion Beer, and Slim Club will perform at the opening on July 24th. Other artists performing live on a rotating daily basis include D-51, Yanawaraba, Kiyama Shoten, SAKISHIMA meeting, Ikuma Akira, Sansaner, Kamiya Chihiro, Shakari, Nakata Kaori, and green note coaster.
In addition, a smartphone-compatible website will be launched on July 17th. Titled "OKINAWA DIARY," it is updated daily with photos of delicious and cute things found in Okinawa.
