This is the second installment of a series introducing stylish gifts chosen by Kyoto's most sophisticated people that will impress your recipient. The second installment features Kaori Fujii, an architectural designer based in Kyoto. She has designed the stores of popular Kyoto-based shops like Il Giottone and Yonemura, and is also a part-time lecturer at the Kyoto University of Art and Design's Department of Environmental Design. Suetomi is the go-to confectionery shop for Kyoto residents looking to give a proper gift. At the end of 2012, Suetomi's own cafe, An Cafe Le Petit Suetomi (1F, Ruyasaka Building, Kawaramachi-dori Oikeshita, Nakagyo-ku, Kyoto City), opened at the Kyoto Hotel Okura, generating a buzz. The interior of the cafe boasts a striking, modern atmosphere, accented by vibrant Suetomi blue walls. As the name suggests, many of the menu items feature the cafe's secret bean paste, and their anpan (red bean buns) are popular for takeout.
Architectural designer Kaori Fujii says she often uses bread as a gift for meetings with clients and on-site.
"When giving bread to male craftsmen, they prefer it over sweets. When giving bread to clients, they don't feel the need to think of something in return, and they can accept it without hesitation. Suetomi's anpan (bean paste buns) are very popular. They are a little pricey, but the bean paste is exceptionally delicious, and people can tell the difference." There is also a special package of five Suetomi Blue buns, which makes it a highly recommended product that adds to the special feeling.
